Williamsburg Wildlife Trapper Tip of the Month:
Do possums hiss?
Whether it is about humans, birds or animals, communication is very important. Animals also communicate with each other like humans but their language and way of communication is bit different. Most of the animals communicate through their different and weird voices. For example, in a colony of rats, there will be hundreds of rats and they communicate with each other to keep the workflow balanced. They do communicate with each other to warn others regarding any kind of danger or to tell others about food availability. Not only this, animals communicate for mating purpose as well.
Similarly, possums also have their language for communication. They make hiss sound for various forms of communication. With this, they are able to send messages to the members which are of their own kind. They usually come out at night and make such sounds. Generally, they make a hissing sound for the warning. When they much such sound, it first seems that they are quite mad or irritated. This is to scare the other animal who is trying to tease them or eat them. Hiss sound acts as a warning to the other animal and also a signal to other possums so that they can come together and protect themselves. During mating season, they produce different types of sounds for communication and to impress the female possum. If female possum is not interested then she will give the reaction through aggressive sound only.
At night, their hissing sound can become really scary but this is not the only sound they produce. If there is any possum hiding in your house then it will come out at night and will run all over the place producing very annoying sounds. Sometimes sounds are also observed during mating season or when they fight with each other for the territory. Therefore, it gets really disturbing and scariest at the same time if there are possums around in the house.
Possums are not that dangerous to humans as they don’t attack humans generally but they can cause damage to your household things. They have very sharp teeth and claws. If possums are really annoying you then you can call the professionals to take them out from your house. It may be surprising to know that in some regions possums are declared as protected animals and any harm done to them will be illegal. If in case you try to catch them then they may get aggressive and can bite you or harm you. Therefore, one should never use any kind of poison or any other such things in those regions. Just call the professionals and they will catch them on their own.
The best way is to avoid them. There are many ways by which possums can be easily avoided such as keeping all the doors and windows closed mainly during the winter season because during winter season they are mainly looking for shelter and food and keep the garage door closed so that they cannot get in from any other way.
